Our first cruise together on Carnival Magic, my husband and I ate breakfast at Blue Iguana on the Lido Deck. My husband was intrigued by the arepas, a dish neither of us had had before, and decided to try them. He immediately fell in love, and on all our subsequent Carnival cruises, getting arepas at Blue Iguana was a breakfast must.
When it came to food challenges, naturally, he challenged me to make him arepas. I started with this Arepas recipe from Epicurious. They were good… But they weren’t the sweet arepas he was used to. After some research I found another recipe: Colombian Arepas de Choclo from Delish Dlites.
I made them this morning after my original cooking plans got derailed, but I still wanted to cook something. My first batch looked a little rough. My impatient ass didn’t wait for the pan to heat up, or have the heat high enough, so I flipped and flipped these poor arepas until they were flat and falling apart. I kept them seperate once they were finally brown and cooked through.
But once the pan was hot and finally hot enough, I was truly on a roll. I quickly finished off the rest of the batter. But now… the final test. I had to see what my husband thought.
Total success! He absolutely loved them. So much so he didn’t even mind that I woke him up a little early on a Sunday to serve him a hot arepas in bed. After he had the first one, he told me I won the challenge and could cross it off my list. Then he had another one.
