Okay, so this one was my bad. It wasn’t an official party. So, I didn’t think to get a lot of photos, so I didn’t get a lot of photos. So, there are not a lot of photos. Sorry.
The Menu
The tres leches cake was a food challenge from the roomie. This turned out to be interesting as I needed to use the mixer to make the cake itself, and then again to make the icing. But I put the mixing bowl in the dishwasher in between and ran out of time to get it back to make the icing. So I had to whisk heavy cream by hand.
At that point, I had already grated two and a half blocks of cheese and my arms were already killing me. But it was literally the last step and I had to get the cake in the fridge two set for two hours. So I was determined to get this done.
And I got it done.
In the process, I harnessed the power of the moon and was grunting and making so much noise, you would have thought I was kind of strongman lifting a car or something. Our roommate stayed in his room until I was done because wasn’t sure what was happening and was too afraid to find out. But that whipped icing… Tasted amazing and had perfect consistency.
I also made the timeline. So it worked out in the end. Just don’t really want to do that again. I, naturally, gave my husband a huge guilt trip afterward for not purchasing me a second mixing bowl for my mixer last Christmas. Although that kind of wasn’t fair because he had to endure me all my gym noises as well. Which, I imagine, were quite concerning. But yes, take a whisk to some heavy cream and keep whipping until you get stiff peaks. It will give you some muscles.
The Tablescape
I really liked this tablescape. I originally had used a navy runner and napkins, but I switched to the light blue when I saw it all together. Definitely prefer it this way. Picked the pink tablecloth because our friends are having a little girl.
Also, I put the candles on the end of the table we weren’t using because I knew I was serving family style and we would have several dishes down, beyond the plates and chargers, so I didn’t want to take up any room with decor. It’s never fun when you knock over something decorative when you’re trying to get yourself some food.
Not to mention the green jar candles were live flame and we all know I am fairly paranoid about live flame on a table, so I definitely wanted to keep that safely confined.
Final Thoughts
- Sharp white cheddar in my favorite mac and cheese recipe is amazing and I love it and I think I will always use that from now on.
- This tablescape is fantastic and I would definitely do it again, if I was likely to do the same table again. I always feel like I want to change it up all the time. With so many combinations, why ever do the same thing twice?
- Maybe I should read new cake challenge recipes a touch more closely before attempting them the day of an event.
- Also, I need to buy another mixing bowl.
