For some reason I was super nervous to sharpen the stupid knives.
When I was a kid, we never sharpened knife knives. Ever! I had no idea what I was doing. Chef gave us a knife sharpening demo in class and I purchased a whetstone so I could sharpen our knives at home. Because, of course, our kitchen knives hadn’t been sharpened since they were purchased, which was about two years previously.
It quickly turned into one of those tasks that you don’t want to do solely because you don’t want to do it and the more you put it off, the less you want to do it. I put a reminder in my phone and set a date. I missed the date and the the alert sat on my phone agonizingly reminding me every day that I needed to sharpen those damn knives.
Finally, I knew I had no excuses left. I got my supplies out and I sharpened all the knives. It was actually a lot faster and easier than I thought it was going to be. Which, I always knew could have been an outcome.
Also, my husband was super helpful with all of the sharpening. Then I remembered that he was a big fan of knives in high school and once used one of my decorative boxes of house a bunch of random switchblades and hunting knives. But thank goodness for that, because he had some great pointers for sharpening that helped me get all of the kitchen knives sharp, from my chef’s knife to my paring knife.
I sharpened everything I could get my hands on, including my school knife, honed them with my steel, and then gave everything a final clean and put it all away. I have school today after being off for spring break, so I’m excited to get back at it.
Also, I need to do my readings.
