This is not a drill! I repeat, this is not a drill!
I had my tour at the culinary campus of the local community college yesterday. It was amazing! I was so impressed by the entire campus. Not only did they have the equipment, space, talented teaching staff, and caring support personnel that I was hoping for, but they did so many wonderful things for the community. I was amazed!
The college offers a food pantry for students, as well as a clothing clothes with clothes for adults and children. They offer loaner laptops, WiFi hotspots they can take home, tutoring, bus and train passes, and health services that range from dental procedures to STI testing. All of these are completely free for students! I couldn’t believe it. I had attended community college in Virginia and they offered nothing even remotely close to this to students. Although, to be fair, I attended community college in Virginia almost 20 years ago.
But let’s talk about those classes…
In Spring 2025, I am going to be taking Basic Food Preparation and Safety & Sanitization. The academic counselor I talked to yesterday suggested I start with two classes because I am working full time and all that. Which sounds like a good idea. I haven’t been in school for a good five years and since then I have moved to a different state and a lot of other things are different.
So, two classes to start!
Starting in the spring feels right, though. I started my college journey Spring 2005 at the first community college I went to. I then transferred to the 4-year college I graduated from Spring 2006. I always started grad school in the fall. I never graduated from grad school. I think that speaks for itself.
I could not be more excited to get started. Here is what I have to do now.
- Call school and make sure they evaluate the transcripts I sent in so I can get credit for the classes I’ve already taken (I don’t want to retake College Composition I at this point in my life)
- Get a food handler’s card for class (it’s a requirement)
- Get books and knives and chef clothes for class
